August Wrap Up // Raving About A New Favorite Series

Happy last day of August, my friends. I am absolutely thrilled right now because I started off this month with a few not-so-great reads but then I found some stuff I completely fell in love with. I was so desperate to read something amazing, and let me tell you, I was very excited to have finally found something that was. AHH. Okay, but here’s everything I did read this month:

Circe by Madeline Miller

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I technically started this in July, but I’ll count it here since I finished it up at the beginning of August. Thinking back on it, I’m still a little disappointed by this book, even though it was beautifully written. You can read my review of Circe here if you want to find out why I thought it didn’t live up to the hype (still hurts to say that tbh).

This is Kind of An Epic Love Story by Kheryn Callender

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Ooh I was excited when I received this ARC from Edelweiss because it sounded SO CUTE. More sadness though because this book wasn’t as good as I thought it’d be either. It was cute though. And I still love Ollie, like, a whole lot. You can read my review if you’re interested in a book with lots of sweet moments, diversity, and a unique storyline.

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

Rating: ★★★★☆

I’ve been wanting to read this one for a while, and I’m happy that I finally did, because I really enjoyed it. It wasn’t my favorite of Becky Albertalli’s, and I had a couple issues with it, but it was still super great. Definetly both hilarious and heartwarming. My review of this one can be found here if you’re wanting to hear more of what I thought!

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

Rating: ★★★★★

This is a webcomic created by the incredible Alice Oseman and it’s basically the cutest thing that’s ever existed. Nick and Charlie are PRECIOUS and I LOVE them. If you haven’t read this, and you’re in the mood for something very sweet, please check this out. You can read it on either Tumblr or Tapas.

A Darker Shade of Magic by Victoria Schwab

Rating: ★★★★★

THIS IS IT YOU GUYS, THE SERIES THAT IS CURRENTLY RUINING MY LIFE. I mean I know you all said this was good but I have… a lot of emotions. I seriously had some kind of transcendent experience reading this. Between the world building, the writing, the characters; this is the best book I’ve read this month, and it’ll be one of my favorites of the year. For sure. Also I have so much love for Rhy Maresh I can’t even take it.

A Gathering of Shadows by Victoria Schwab

Rating: ★★★★★

This one moved a bit slower, but the build up to that ending was insane. Also that cliffhanger was absolutely brutal. I don’t even have proper words. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters better in this one, and of course, meeting Alucard was the greatest. I’m a MESS.

And that’s it! Like I said, the first part of the month started off a little disappointing. I was so desperate for something to just completely blow me away, so I was really glad to have found some stuff I fell in love with by the end of the month.

I also just want to take a moment to remind you guys to that these wrap ups aren’t meant to make us feel upset about what we didn’t accomplish this month. I know it can be hard not to compare yourself to other readers right now, with all the wrap ups and TBRs out there, but please try not focus too much on the numbers. If you didn’t feel like you read or posted enough this month, I want to tell you this: the number of books you read or number of posts you put out do not define you as a reader or as a blogger. You’re all doing more than enough. Just something to keep in mind.❤️

Alright, I am now off to go read A Conjuring of Light!! I hope you guys had a wonderful August, and that you have even better September. 🙂

    1. Ahh I know what you mean! I kept saying I’d read it but would never start it. I’m so glad I finally got around to it 🙂 Hope you love it whenever you get the chance to read it though!!

  1. Omg!! I want to read A Darker Shade of Magic so bad! I have Vicious and I was planning on reading that first but omg I might just do A Darker Shade of Magic first!

And I totally agree with what to said at the end. I am definitely going to be reading a lot less once I’m back to teaching next week but what I’ve learned with blogging is that reading/posting shouldn’t be about quantity. As long as you’re having fun and reading good books that’s all that matters!

    1. Yes please read Shades of Magic as soon as you can!! I would love to hear your thoughts and talk about it with you because it’s SO GOOD. Although I’ve heard Vicious is excellent too so I don’t blame you if you decide to read it first:)

I’m glad that you agreed with what I said at the end because I just think it’s a really important thing to think about right now! I often see wrap up posts where bloggers feel bad about how little they read during the month, and it just makes me sad because it shouldn’t matter how many books we read, right? Or how much we post!

Also I hope you have a great year of teaching ahead 🙂

And obviously Heartstopper is ADORABLE!! I can’t wait for the next update!!

Although I’m sad your first couple reads weren’t great 😦 But at least they seem to be picking up! 🙂

    1. IM GLAD IM READING THEM TOO!! And seriously I will never NOT want to talk about these so no worries. And I may or may not JUST have sent you another message freaking out about it😂

      Heartstopper ugh!! So cute.

Yeah I was pretty bummed about the first couple books I read this month but things started to pick up with Upside!! And I HAVE YOU TO THANK! Because you told me about Heartstopper to begin with and of course I probably wouldn’t have read Shades of Magic if you hadn’t kept talking about it. So thank you for all the great recs!!

  3. I’m so glad you got to read some good books this month Brianna! I haven’t been able to read at all this August 😂
Anyways i’m So glad you enjoyed ADSOM. I just bought it last night, but i need to read it ASAP (i’m actually debating between that and SoC 😬 help?!)
And lastly, i really Agree with what you said about monthly wrap ups, tbrs, and posts. Honestly we’re all busy with life and stuff so we shouldn’t feel bad about numbers (even though we all do. Definite whoops 😂)
Thank you so much Brianna! Amazing post as always! 💞😊

    1. Thanks!! I’m glad I read some good ones too, although I’m sorry to hear you didn’t get to read much in August:(
YAY I’m really excited you got ADSOM😃 But ahh that’s a hard choice on which one to read. I’ve definitely heard amazing things about SoC, but ADSOM is my favorite right now, so I’d always recommend that one. I hope you enjoy whichever one you choose though😊
Yes, it’s really hard not to get caught up in the numbers sometimes, especially when there’s all these wrap up/TBR posts going around. But it’s important to try not to focus on those for sure!
And aw thanks for always being so sweet, Kat😊

      1. You’re welcome lovely! 💞Thanks for always being an amazing blogger Brianna!
And it’s alright I guess. I would have really liked to read more, but ya know.
And thank you again! I had a poll going on my bookstagram and (shhhhh) the winner, as of right now, is SOC (but we’ll see 😉)

  4. Wow you had such a great reading month! I definitely need to get around to reading A Darker Shade of Magic, it seems like the hype around it is definitely deserved!😊 And omg I love Heartstopper, it’s the cutest thing ever!

It’s a shame you didn’t enjoy Circe as much as you expected. It’s one of my most anticipated reads of the year so I hope I’ll end up liking it but I’ve been hearing mixed reviews so far!

    1. Yeah, I was super worried that there was too much hype for ADSOM, but its completely lived up to it. I hope you gets chance to read it soon! And ahh, isn’t Heartstopper so sweet? It always makes my day when there’s a new update❤️

Circe was a bit of a disappointment for sure, but I think it was one of those books that just wasn’t for me because it seems that a lot of others loved it. Hope you do too! 🙂

  5. OMG, I’m so glad you enjoyed The Upside of Unrequited because I just got a copy eeeep! AND I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT ALICE OSEMAN’S WEBCOMIC! I haven’t read any of her books yet, but I’ve heard amazing things + the art looks incredible!!!! I’m ready for the cuteness. ♥

I’m a new follower, BTW! Nice to meet you, Brianna! ♥

    1. Haha that’s how I felt before I read it too!! I hope you adore it when you get the chance to read it. It definitely lives up the the hype 🙂

      1. Yes I’ve been reading it on the Tapas app! It’s ongoing, so there are still updates coming out. So I’m not sure how much of the comic there will be in first volume of the graphic novel. I’d recommend reading it online for now 🙂 It’s free, and if you decide you love it you can always get the physical copies as they are released!

      2. Great! Thank you so much for your recommendation, I will check it out later this week! Also, I am not totally stalking you, but your review appeared on goodreads when I was looking through the reviews for Heartstopper, so I added you 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes, exactly! August didn’t necessarily include a ton of favorites, but since I started a really incredible series, it made up for it ❤️ And yeah, you should definitely read Shades of Magic if you get the chance to!! I’d highly recommend it 🙂
