Down the TBR Hole #1

I’ve always liked to keep the number of books on my TBR somewhat low, but ever since joining online book community, that’s become WAY more difficult. With so many good recs going around, I find myself adding books by the dozens and the list just keeps growing. Woops.

Right now I have 214 books on my Goodreads TBR, which may not seem like much to some, but to me… it is A LOT. I’d like to start cutting it down to books I know I want to read for sure, so I thought it’d be a good idea to participate in Down the TBR Hole to get this list more organized!

Down the TBR Hole was originally created by Lost in a Story and this is how it works:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

1984 by George Orwell

I added this back in 2014 when I was super in to dystopian books (shoutout to Divergent and The Hunger Games), and while I’m not as fascinated by that genre anymore, I do think 1984 would still be an interesting read. I’ve read George Orwell’s Animal Farm, and I didn’t love it, but I did think it was pretty genius. I willing to bet the same goes for this book!

>> Verdict: KEEP

The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

I’m tempted to leave this on my TBR just because this cover is just so dang cute, but that’s… probably not a valid reason to keep it. Honestly, I’m just not sure if I’ll ever actually read this. While it does sound like a beautiful contemporary, it’s been on my TBR for years and I’ve also heard tons of mixed reviews. I don’t know, I’m just not feeling this one anymore.

>> Verdict: GO

Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare

This will (F I N A L L Y) be moving off my ‘Want to Read’ shelf to my ‘Currently Reading’ in… less than 24 hours, I hope! I’m nearly finished with my reread of Lady Midnight and that means this is up next. Oh boy I’m gonna sob. For now, of course, this is staying on my TBR but that’ll be changing soon and I can’t WAIT.

>> Verdict: KEEP

The Diary of A Young Girl by Anne Frank

Here’s something you might not know about me: I’m a bit of a history geek, especially when it comes to World War II. So I definitely want to read this at some point! Also – don’t judge my poor memory, but I actually think we might’ve listened to this audiobook at school when I was in 8th grade? It’s all a blur though and I still think it deserves a proper read.

>> Verdict: KEEP

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

I’m just so beyond ashamed that I still haven’t read this series. I KNOW I’m going to love it, and I’ve heard it’s just as good as Percy Jackson & The Olympians, so I’m definitely keeping this. Here’s to hoping I’ll finally read it in 2019??

>> Verdict: KEEP

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

I’m conflicted about whether or not I want to keep this, but my mom has been insisting for years that I need to give it a read. Plus, I keep thinking it’ll be a good idea to read this before My Lady Jane, which I’ve been meaning to pick up for a while. I think I gotta keep this one!

>> Verdict: KEEP

Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

This one (sadly) still doesn’t have a cover. But I’m not at all iffy about keeping this one or deleting it. Considering this is my single most anticipated release of all time, this book is never leaving my TBR until the day it’s in my hands and I’m reading about Will Herondale again. I’ve waited nearly 5 years for this book now, and I’ve never been so impatient for anything in my LIFE.

>> Verdict: KEEP

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey

This is another classic, and one I’m certainly interested to read at some point for the mental health rep. It’s been compared to one of my all time favorite books, It’s Kind of A Funny Story, a countless number of times so I’m assuming I’m going to adore this one!

>> Verdict: KEEP

A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron

Another thing you might not know about me: I love dogs. I really, really, really love dogs. Like, a lot. I thought I’d read this at some point and probably cry over it, but it’s been on my TBR for far too long and I just don’t think it’s going to happen. I guess it’s gotta go (although my love for dogs still remains strong).

>> Verdict: GO

This was, surprisingly, quite the variety of books. Unsurprisingly, I only deleted 2 from this list. But ya know, I guess it’s better than nothing!

I actually really enjoyed doing this and will probably participate in it every once in a while on my blog. I already feel better about my TBR and like I actually might get it organized for once.

Alright that’s all for today! Hope you all have had a great weekend ❤

I’d love to know

Which of the books on this list have you read? Did you think I made the right choices to keep or delete? How many books do you have on your TBR!?

    1. Oh my goodness 3000! I don’t even blame you – it’s so difficult to not keep adding to your TBR when there’s so many good books out there! I wish you luck with cutting it down though lol 🙂

  1. Ahahahaha, my TBR is way too big, but honestly I just tend to consider it a way to keep track of all the books that are on my radar, because I have no memory and would forget them all otherwise. I do probably need to clean it out a little bit, but I’m not too concerned…

I NEED Chain of Gold ASAP. I can’t believe you’ve been waiting for it for five years already… that must be torture! I NEED IT!
And ahhh, Lord of Shadows! I can’t wait to be able to scream about it with you! 🙂

I read Jane Eyre a few years ago, and I was bored out of my mind, but then again, I don’t tend to have much luck with classics… I just can’t take the old fashioned writing style (oops)

    1. Ugh yeah that’s such a good point. Even if I’m not totally sure I want to read a book, I still usually end up adding it anyway because I’m like well what if I DO want to read it someday?? Which is why our TBRs start growing rapidly😂

This wait for Chain of Gold has been absolutely BRUTAL but I just know the wait is going to be so worth it for Will and Tessa and James and Lucie! And Cordelia Carstairs! And any and all Blackthorns lol. I just can’t wait for us to read it :’)

Also I’m about to finish LM and LoS will be started tomorrow and then we can yell about it for eternity. And also cry!

Ooh okay good to know! Classics can be be so boring, which is exactly why I’ve been avoiding Jane Eyre, but I just have this slight hope that I’ll like it😅 A very slight hope because I can hardly ever make myself get through a classic that isn’t for school lol.

    1. Awh thanks so much Taasia!! I’m starting Lord of Shadows today and cannot wait 🙂 And yes I know exactly what you mean – I’m so tempted to give Jane Eyre a try but fear it’ll be so boring😅 I hope we both end up enjoying it if we ever give it a chance though!

  2. Well I have 249 books on my TBR and it’s ridiculous but it just keeps getting bigger and bigger 😂 and I’m so scared I try Jane Eyre and find it boring that is literally one of my worst fears lol so good luck!!

    1. Lol I can relate to having a TBR that just seems to keep getting bigger😂 And YES that’s exactly what I’m afraid of! I want to love Jane Eyre… but what if it’s boring?! I guess I’ll just have to find out ahh😅
Thanks so much for your comment!

  3. Yes! The Lost Hero!!!!!!! It’s so good and the Heroes of Olympus is one of the best series I’ve ever read.
And 1984 is good (?) it’s been years since I read it and it creeped me out but I learned a lot. I was also like 14, and way too young for that dark a story. But I read it and I’m never, ever going to read it again, haha.

    1. Ahh I love this hype for HOO! I can’t believe I haven’t read it yet but I’m looking forward to it SO MUCH. ❤
Lol I’m actually a little nervous about 1984. I’ve always thought it sounded interesting, but it’s usually hit or miss for me with the classics. I’m hoping maybe it’ll be somewhat enjoyable now that I’m older? But who knows😂

  4. I love Rick Riordan and his books, BUT HE WRITES SO FAST. I CAN’T KEEP UP. I think I might have read The Lost Hero years ago, but then never continued on to read the rest (WHICH IS A SHAME). I need to get cracking on that. ANywaysss, thanks for this post – it was so fun to read 🙂

    1. I KNOW RIGHT? I feel like PJO came out and next thing I know I’m behind on a million series lol. But saaame I really need to read HOO already! I hope we both end up loving it. 🙂
Awww I’m glad you liked the post and thank YOU for your nice comment😭💕

      1. You know who else writes book really fast? V. E. Schwab. I want to read her books, but every time I think I want to start a specific one, another new book of hers comes out and then I think I should pick that one up….and of course I end up reading none of them haha.
