2019 Reading and Blogging Goals + My January TBR

HAPPY 2019 FRIENDS! 🎉 This post is a bit overdue – putting it together took longer than expected – but I am here with it now and I’m excited. Today I’m sharing 5 of my 2019 reading goals, 5 of my blogging goals, PLUS my January TBR at the end. It’s quite the combo.

Before I get to the goals though, I do just want to say this upfront: I’ve never really been in to goals. I’m not in to the idea of New Years resolutions. But this year, there are definitely things I’d like to get done so I thought writing them down would help.

I like to think of these goals as more of a gentle guidance in to the things I want to accomplish, but not necessarily things I absolutely 100% percent need to do. I just don’t want to be ruled by them to the point that it causes more harm than good, ya know?

But here are those goals I have for the year, and my January TBR 🙂 –

23FE849F-4E81-4072-A462-67A588B9D832

➤ Go through with rebranding already! – Back in November, I shared a post about my plans to rebrand my blog. Well, now it’s January… AND NOTHING HAS CHANGED. It’s been a much bigger process than I expected, but I promise there are things going on behind the scenes. Kat, who I am blessed to have in my life, has been helping me out and things are starting to move along. Changes are coming soon, friends!

➤ Start posting reviews again – I can’t believe I havent posted a review on my blog in months. This has been weighing on me because I genuinely love writing reviews, but I’ve been struggling with finishing them lately. I’m going to be working on this because I MISS REVIEWS.

➤ Bring more attention to critical topics – Specifically, I’d like to incorporate more discussion on the topic of mental health. That’s a big goal this year. But I also just want to bring more awareness to important topics in general. I plan to do this through discussion posts, book recommendations, in my reviews, etc.

➤ Get organized – I would REALLY like to be more organized this year. Like, I need to do that. Scheduling posts in advance, having a weekly posting schedule, creating spreadsheets to keep track of things, etc. It sounds like it’ll make life a whole lot easier.

➤ Continue growing! – And I don’t mean I have goals for any numbers I want to reach stats-wise, but I mean growing in my content, in myself, and as a blogger in general. That probably sounds cheesy or whatever, but it’s the TRUTH.

80523845-35A5-465C-9FB8-EE851BED8D14.png

➤ Read 100 books – This is the first time I’m ever setting a reading goal. I’ve always felt there were too many drawbacks that come with setting one, but I realize now there are also plenty of benefits. And if I do start getting anxious about meeting this goal, I’m not going to hesitate to lower it or delete it altogether. Always keeping it quality over quantity when it comes to reading.

➤ Keep up with ARCs – I’m just going to say that I’m… not very proud of my NetGalley ratio right now. This year is going to be about keeping up with ARCs!

➤ Read more diverse books from diverse authors – This is a huge goal for this year as I want to do everything I can to give more support to diverse authors and to keep promoting diversity in the book community. I have LOTS of books in mind that I’m looking forward to reading and talking about!

➤ Continue catching up on backlist reads – While I’m (of course) excited for ARCs and new releases this year, I still have plenty of backlist reads I need to catch up on. I’ve missed out on tons over the years and I definitely don’t want to overlook those.

➤Get back in to contemporary –  I have not read a contemporary book since… October. In fact, I haven’t even read a standalone since then. I got extremely caught up in fantasy series the last few months of 2018 and it’s been the BEST, but I’m really missing contemporary. It’s definitely time to get back in to it.

Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare7CBBF21E-FD76-49EA-8835-6C04D19ADF04

I totally didn’t mean to do another reread of The Infernal Devices, and by that I mean I most certainly did and it has been a great time. This is quite possibly my favorite book of all time and I’m so happy it’ll be my first (full) read of 2019.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Blackimg_9616

All I know is that this book is enemies to lovers and it involves faeries, so I’m pretty much sold. Also people seem to like Jude, but Cardan is controversial, and he also has a tail that is controversial?? My knowledge of this book is solely based on all the talk of it in the community and this is literally what I’ve picked up on.

The Wicked King by Holly Black34E4BC9A-74C5-4A11-BD09-5B538493198C

I’m just assuming I’m going to enjoy The Cruel Prince enough to read the sequel which is out in less than week now! YAY. I don’t actually know why I’m filled with so much excitement for a sequel to a book I’ve never read. It’s because there are faeries involved, I think.

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshiimg_9785

I nearly forgot this was coming out this month and when I remembered I almost screamed. I need this book and this misfit group of characters in my life.

Starfish by Akemi Dawn BowmanD4A0D4C6-2B63-431C-92FF-34A00F913692

My friend Dezzy recommended this book, and because she is the contemporary QUEEN, I trust this will be the read to help me get back in to the genre. 💜

A List of Cages by Robin Roe7D9C2EA4-D27A-4920-A9D2-4B07B5035122

Let’s see how many times I can put this on my TBR without reading it! I actually (finally) got a physical copy of this a few weeks ago though so I’m one step closer picking it up. And I cannot waaaait.

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley
218C399F-53AF-4C11-98F4-5C4C6E328ECD.jpeg

I also got this one a couple weeks ago (see, I’m really AM trying to get back in contemporary!) and I’m looking forward to it a lot. Any book that involves BOOKS is always an instant fave. And supposedly this takes place in a bookshop. 💙

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugoimg_9789

I just want you all to know that I just stared at this cover for a good minute straight and nearly teared up because it’s so beautiful and I still can’t be believe this book is real? I’m trying to remain calm and coherent but I can’t because NIKOLAI LANTSOV IS COMING BACK IN TO OUR LIVES ON JANUARY 29TH.

And that’s it! Of course, my TBR is always subject to change, but I’m so hyped for all these reads no matter if I get to them all this month or not. And I’m really, really looking forward to all I have planned blogging and reading wise in 2019. 🙂

Also – I wanted to remind you all of this as we go in to the new year: just do what you can, when you can, and that is enough. I know the beginning of the year can be overwhelming, especially for those of us who struggle with anxiety and depression, because it feels like we have a lot we’re meant to get done. And of course we should talk about our goals and celebrate accomplishments, but we should also remind ourselves that we’re human and can only do so much.

If you’re feeling stressed about the new year, I see you and I hear you, and I’m here to tell you that you are going to kill it in 2019! No matter how much you do or do not accomplish this year.

And on that note, I hope you all DO have a wonderful 2019 filled with all the happiness and tons of 5 star reads! I’m so excited to see what’s in store for all of us this year. ❤️❤️❤️

I’d love to know

What are some of your reading and blogging goals for the year? What are you reading this month? Are you looking forward to, or have you read, any of the books I mentioned?!

  1. Getting organized is probably something I should try to do also, but then again, that sounds like a lot of work so maybe I won’t. I can’t wait for King of Scars! I should probably read SoC amd CK first, but those are next up on my tbr so I should finish them before KoS comes out (hopefully).

  2. These are some great goals, Brianna!! I’m especially excited for your discussions on mental health
    – it’s such an important topic to address. Good luck with all of your goals – I believe in you 😊💞 (And I completely agree with what you said about goals – they should guide you in the right direction, but it’s totally okay if you don’t achieve them.)

Also AHHH I’m honestly so honored that you called me the contemporary queen :’) because you’re the fantasy queen!! 😉 I love that we’re both trying to get back into genres we haven’t been reading, haha – me with fantasy and you with contemporary. I’m so excited for you to read Starfish!! And Words in Deep Blue is also on my TBR and I can’t wait to read it 💙 AND I really hope you enjoy The Cruel Prince!! (I’ve heard the same things about it from the book community too, lol.)

Wonderful post as always!! I absolutely love the reminder you put at the end. Wishing you the same – I hope 2019 will be an incredible year for you!! I’ll always be here if you need me 💖

HEHE I feel honored to be friends with the contemporary queen honestly. 👑 I’m definitely glad I’ll have your help with getting back in to the genre lol. And omg MEEEE the fantasy queen? … I am touched. Starfish and Words in Deep Blue are going to be great, I can’t wait❤️ And lol the stuff I’ve heard about The Cruel Prince on Twitter makes me laugh so hard. I have no idea what’s going on in that book but I’m intrigued?

And I’m so excited for King of Scars. Six of Crows is my favorite book, and Nikolai is my favorite character. Therefore, King of Scars is going to be terrific.

  4. Great set of goals! I hope you accomplish all you wish to this year. I can’t wait to see your little rebrand of the blog–they’re always so fun and full of growth, albeit complicated for us as we rebrand. I’m right there with you! I’m also really interested in seeing you incorporate more about mental health on the blog–it’s such an important topic and I’m always ecstatic to see that talked about more.

    1. This comment made me so happy, Jessica! Thank you so much for all of your kindness. Rebranding is definitely a tough process, but I have a feeling it’ll all be worth it in the end 🙂 And I sincerely appreciate your supportive words about incorporating mental health in to my blog! It’s something I’m a little nervous about – as it’s such a personal and critical topic – but what you said makes me feel a lot better about it. Thank you, and happy new year to you!! 💕

      1. It totally will! You’ve 100% got this rebranding and I am just gonna wait patiently to flail over it! Nerves are completely normal when you approach such a sensitive topic, especially one that so many struggle with, and that has so many layers, but I’m glad you’re feeling a lot better about. I meant every word!

  6. What is this Words in Deep Blue and why haven’t I already added it on my tbr, I shall rectify this mistake immediate.
Sis, high five on keep intending to start A List Of Cages and then just not doing it for no reason at all, that’s been me for half of 2018.
And omg. You’re going to adore The Cruel Prince. By the end, you’re going to be a). shell shocked because umm what in the actual hell just happened, b). in utter awe bc Jude is a Queen™ and c). Trying to understand at what point you actually started liking Cardan.
At least you can immediately start The Wicked King, I’ve been waiting for most of the year and *it’s not been good.*

Good luck on your goals, I’m sure you’re gonna kick ass. ❤

    1. YES doesn’t Words in Deep Blue sound like theeee cutest thing? That makes me happy that you added it to your TBR, ahh I truly can’t wait to read that one💙
Lol I’m so glad I’m not the only one who keeps unintentionally putting off A List of Cages. Like, I’ve been meaning to read this since… July, and it’s still on my TBR oops. But I hope we both end up loving it whenever we pick it up :’)
Literally everything you just told me about The Cruel Prince made me 100 times more excited to read it. I LIVE for characters with questionable morals so I have a good feeling I’m going to love Cardan without meaning to. Also, Jude sounds iconic!

THANK YOUUU! I wish you luck with any goals you have for this year💕💕💕

  7. good luck with your goals brianna, totally believe you can! i’m actually using kaleena @ reader voracious’s free template, and it’s just done wonders for me! i hope you love a list of cages – it was just so poignant and just hit me right in the feels. no one really talks about this book anymore, which is a big shame. i’m not sure whether i want to read the wicked king or not, so i’ll be waiting for some more reviews to come in, though there have been plenty! this post is another reminder i need to finish the Grisha trilogy ASAP to read king of scars, haha. i really want to do some buddy reads, change up my aesthetic, and try to receive some ARCs in 2019, fingers crossed! have a great 2019, can’t wait to see how it goes for you!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. thank you sm Taasia!! ❤️❤️❤️ ooh I’m definitely going to have to check out that template you mentioned. And I know right?? A List of Cages was super popular a few months ago, but the hype seems to have (sadly) disappeared. I’m excited to read it though. I hope you end up enjoying The Wicked King if you decide to pick it up, and King of Scars once you get around to it after the Grisha trilogy!

Those sound like SUCH great goals you have going in to the new year! I wish you luck with all of them💞 happy 2019!!

  10. Yay! I’m looking forward to seeing your rebranding and reviews! And yes for more backlist reads! I have so many books published in previous years I want to read and newly released books as well. I did make Edelweiss and Netgalley accounts but I don’t think I’ll be requesting much ARCs…because well SO MUCH BOOKS TO READ AHHHH

And The Cruel Prince was SO SO GOOD and I think you’ll love it if you like morally grey characters, lots of intrigue and backstabbing, and faeries. I’m so nervous to read The Wicked King because I’m afraid of what it’ll do to my feels 😉

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Awh Miri thanks so much!! 💞 hehe I know exactly what you mean about trying not to request too many ARCs because there really ARE lots of backlist reads to catch up on! I hope you enjoy all the ones you get to this year😊

Ooooh you definitely just made The Cruel Prince sound very intriguing! I love the sound of it – I think I’m going to go ahead and start it in the next couple days! Good luck with TWK – I’m sure it’ll give you all the feels and you’ll LOVE it! ❤️

  11. You have some AWESOME goals set for this year! I need to rebrand, too, but like you said, it’s such a huge process 😅 I’m also so glad to see you wanting to focus on mental health and diversity. I think that in general the book community does really good with trying to read all kinds of different books by authors of all different walks of life, skin colors, religions, etc. and I think it’s amazing. I’ve only read one book that is on your TBR (List of Cages). Excited to see all of your thoughts this month!

P.S.- I’m excited that you want to get back into book reviewing because I’d love to read some!!

Oh my goodness that is so nice of you to say! I’m so happy to start bringing more attention to diversity and mental health in to my blog, and your support means the world! I agree – I love how much the book community talks about and supports these important topics. 🙂

I honestly can’t wait to see what books you check out to help you bring more attention to mental health and diversity. I think it’s a great thing to be working toward! 13. Good luck with your goals!! 🙂
I… already forget what most of mine are because I’m the worst 🙈 The only one I ever really actively think about is my range challenge if we’re being honest… I’m trying to read 150 books, which is less than I would actually LIKE to read, but also 200 was way too stressful, and I’ve (sadly) been reading slightly less than I used to, and I just didn’t want to stress about it.

And AHHH I NEED KING OF SCARS. I CAN’T WAIT. SO EXCITED! And also the Gilded Wolves sounds soooooooo good, and I really want to read it!! You’ll need to let me know what you think 🙂

I read Starfish over the summer and it was SO GOOD. It’s such a beautifully written book, and I just loved it! And I barely remember A List of Cages, but I really liked it when I read it 😂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Iris!! Omg yes I know what you mean – this is the first time I’m ever actually listing out reading goals for myself, so I’m trying to make them manageable and ones I won’t forget😂 150 is a great goal!! I’m super impressed you got to 200 last year, but it’s so so so much better to not stress about it so I’m proud of you for lowering that number. Although it is sad you aren’t reading as much anymore (I can relate😭)!

KoS is out SO soon and I cannot contain my excitement GAAAH !!! And I’m so hyped about The Gilded Wolves OMG💕💕💕

I think I’m starting Starfish tonight and I can’t wait! And lol understandable that you don’t remember much of A List of Cages😂 I’ve heard it’s good so I’m looking forward to that one!!

  14. Hey Brianna,

Those sound like excellent blog goals. I’m still personally scrambling to get mine organized and full of content, but it’s fun.

Holly Black is one of my favorite authors. I’m not sure if you’ve heard or not, but she has other books. Tithe and Ironside are really great YA novels as well if you have the time to check them out.

As for diverse reads, my entire blog is devoted to diverse fantasy books so if you ever have the time to compare lists on what you’re interested in I would love to know if you’ve maybe heard of some that I haven’t 🙂

    1. Hi Vicki! Oh thank you so much! I wish you luck with your own blogging goals – I know it’s super hard to get everything organized at the beginning of the year, but I’m sure you’ll do amazing 🙂

Oooh yeah I’ve heard Holly Black has some other books. I actually recently bought The Darkest Part of the Forest and cannot wait to read it! And I’ll definitely have to check out those other ones you mentioned.

That is absolutely incredible that your blog is devoted to diverse fantasy books. That’s exactly the type of book I’m hoping to read more of (fantasy is my favorite!) so I love that. And sure, I’d love to compare lists for diverse fantasy books sometime! I’ve only read a few so far, so I’m sure you have a lot more haha 🙂 I can’t wait to read more!

Thanks so much for your comment Vicki!
