Monthly TBR: March 2019

Happy March my friends! ~

I’m here with a TBR today that I truly could not be more excited for, but before we get to that, I feel like I should make it clear that I originally had no intention of making this March TBR. This was for a few different reasons:

  • I’ve kinda been in a reading slump lately due to mental health reasons
  • March is going to be a busy month with college & potentially traveling
  • I’m a mood reader & I seem to never be able to follow these!

So logically, I know I should just take it easy this month and not stress about what I’m reading. But the thing is… I love making TBRs. I love planning ahead (I suspect this has to do with me being a major INFJ) and having an idea of what my next reads will be. Hence, how I ended up making this post anyway.

With that being said though, I know I have to make this a relaxed reading month because of my uncertain reading habits and busyness and such. I won’t expect to get through a whole lot and my reads will mainly consist of rereads, short contemporaries, and audiobooks. It’ll just be chill and flexible.

On to my tentative, not-too-ambitious TBR for March!

The Wicked King by Holly Black

I’ve done it, friends… I’ve given in. Despite the fact that I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Cruel Prince, my love for Jude Duarte was enough for me to pick up the sequel. Plus, I was encouraged after some of you told me you enjoyed this more than TCP. I sincerely appreciated that input because, even though I’ve only just started this book, I have to agree with you all based on what I’ve read so far. This is some pretty good stuff. I’m looking forward to the rest!86B11B6B-FEB6-4837-950E-F6DB12C25BD3

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman

I’m rereading this gem with Diverse Divers this month and I really, truly, could not be more excited. This is one of those books that means the absolute world to me because of how impactful it was when I first read it. It’ll forever be an all time favorite. Also, I have a half finished review sitting in my drafts so hopefully this reread will give me the chance to complete that so I can properly explain why I love this book as much as I do!

City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass by Cassandra Clare

Putting this on my TBR feels very strange, but in a good way. It’s been nearly 5 years since I read TMI and I’m now about to embark on quite the adventure with a reread of the original trilogy. I’ll definitely be feeling the nostalgia when I revisit this series BUT I’ll also attempt to rate these objectively this time as I know my opinions have probably changed a lot. I’ll likely read these sporadically throughout March and in to early April, since this reread is in preparation for The Red Scrolls of Magic which is out April 9th (!!!)86B11B6B-FEB6-4837-950E-F6DB12C25BD3

We Are Okay by Nina LaCour

I cannot even tell you how many times I’ve picked up this book at Barnes and Noble and contemplated getting it. The cover is beautiful AND the story sounds beautiful, so I’ve been very intrigued. I’m so glad I decided to hold off on buying it though because I got the e-book yesterday for $2.99! We love a good deal. This is a super short read so I should be able to get through it this month. I’m very excited.86B11B6B-FEB6-4837-950E-F6DB12C25BD3

Restore Me by Tahereh Mafi

I can’t believe Defy Me comes out on April 2nd and I STILL haven’t read this. Depending on where I am with my TMI reread, this might get pushed back until after April 9th but I did want to try to have this done before the next book comes out. We’ll just have to see how that all goes. Also, I only read the original trilogy once back in 2014, so I’m really hoping I remember enough of it to jump right in to this. Fingers crossed.79EAD53B-FCBE-4F98-A0D3-40D43E9E85B1

➤Poetry – I used to love poetry in high school but only just got back in to it last month with Light Filters In and The Princess Saves Herself in This One. I’m going to try to pick up some poetry books in March too, since they’re typically easy reads and I’ve been enjoying them. Goddess of the Hunt and Depression & Other Magic Tricks are two I’ve been eyeing, so we’ll see if I get around to those! Or any others I discover.

➤Another contemporary or two – I own quite a few short contemporaries I still haven’t read (Words in Deep Blue, A List of Cages, Girl Made of Stars, etc.) so I hope to squeeze some in if I get the chance.

➤Short audiobooks – In February, I finished my first audiobook ever (The Language of Thorns) and it was such a wonderful experience. I’m already excited about how much more reading I’ll get done because I can do other productive things while reading at the same time. That’s truly a gift. I’m looking forward to doing some more exploring of audiobooks this month.

And that’ll be it! I know this was all rather chaotic, but that’s kinda how I’m feeling going in to March right now so it’ll just have to represent my life at the moment haha. I’ll definitely be taking it easy with reading this month and I’m totally okay with that. Because these books I have listed on here? I’m endlessly excited for them, no matter if I get to them all this month or not.

I hope you’re all having a good start of the month so far! If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed with things to do, with all the books on your TBR, or with life in general, just remember to take a step back if you need to. Your reading life doesn’t have to be so structured if that doesn’t work for you. Just read when you can and read! for! enjoyment! That’s so important. And no matter how much or how little you read, you’re still a reader at the end of the day. ❤️

Take care friends!

I’d love to know

What do you plan to read this month? Have you read any of the books I mentioned? Do you have any poetry books or audiobooks you recommend I check out?

  2. I can totally relate! I ALSO am a huge mood reader and have trouble sticking to TBRs but also LOVE making them 😡 Slumps are honestly the worst- I have been in one for quite a bit now. It certainly is a struggle.
I have been itching to read We Are Okay as well! I always pick it up and just haven’t had it in me to go through with it.

    Awesome list!

    1. Haha I’m so glad I’m not alone in this! I’m not sure why I like making TBRs so much if I struggle to stick to them but oh well😂 And ah I feel you on the reading slump – they really are the worst! Here’s to hoping we both get out of them this month. And oh I hope you love We Are Okay whenever you get around to it!

      thank you Samantha!

    1. SAAAAME. I’m the worst at sticking to TBRs haha. Catching up on ARCs and books you physically own sounds like the perfect plan though👍 Good luck to you as well & happy reading!

    1. Thank you so much Olivia💞 I’ve had A List of Cages on my TBR for far too long now haha. I did read the first chapter a couple weeks ago though and I’m really looking forward to (hopefully) continuing it this month. Thank you, I hope you have a great month too!

  3. Ahhh have fun rereading Radio Silence and TMI!!! I really want to reread Radio Silence soon!

And oooh, I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on The Wicked King! Hopefully you’ll enjoy it more than The Cruel Prince 🙂
I read We Are Okay last summer, and while I couldn’t really connect with it, it was certainly beautifully written! I hope you like it more than I did!

    1. Thank you so much! I’m so excited for these rereads of TMI and Radio Silence. Ooh you should definitely reread Radio Silence soon! ALED. AND FRANCES. AND AHHH that whole book is genius.

So far I’m liking TWK more than TCP so fingers crossed it stays that way!! And oh yeah I’ve heard a LOT of mixed reviews on We Are Okay so I’m interested to see if I’ll end up liking it or not. It was kind of a fast decision to read it this month since it’s short and I just got the ebook for a good deal lol. Hopefully it’s good though! happy March Iris!

  4. I tend to listen to a lot of nonfiction and children’s audiobooks lol. I like it when the author narrates their story, you know? I feel I get more out of it. And children’s books have a lot of sound effects and musical stuff going on. I suspect it’s to keep kids interested but this grown girl loves it as well lmao!

I always have a hazy idea of what I want to read each month. But it’s never concrete. My mood shifts too much. My reading goal for March is to only read books by women. Luckily, I have tons of books to choose from 😉

Good luck with your TBR! 🙂

    1. Oh nice, I was thinking of trying out some nonfiction audiobooks soon! And I never thought about listening to children’s ones but ah that sounds like a lot fun!! I’ll have to try some out sometime.

Yeah, that’s how I am too – I just have a very vague idea of what I’ll read, but being a mood reader means it’s always subject to change haha. Glad I’m not alone in that! And oh that’s such a great idea for Women’s History Month! My TBR this month is coincidentally all women authors so that makes me happy.

Thank you! I hope you have a wonderful March, and happy reading!

  5. I don’t create a strict tbr for the month as my health issues tend to throw schedules off & then I get frustrated for not achieving what I aimed for. I am also a mood reader so that does not help! There are so many books on your list I want to read and haven’t read yet. The Mortal Instruments in particular (I know, how have I not read the series yet?!) If you would like audiobook recommendations you should check out Naomi Novik’s Uprooted & Spinning Silver. The narrator is great 🙂

    1. Yes I understand where you’re coming from! I don’t like to make strict TBRs either because my mental health usually gets in the way and I feel badly about not reading what I planned to. And of course, being a mood reader just makes it more complicated haha. It’s totally okay to just read what we want, whenever we can though. We don’t need follow any strict guidelines to be readers❤️ ahh TMI is a great series, though not my favorite of the Shadowhunter Chronicles! It’s worth checking out though! And oh thank you so much – I think I have Uprooted and Spinning Silver on my TBR 🙂

  6. I’m sorry to hear you’ve been struggling with mental health and a reading slump, I’ve been there. :/ Just make sure to do lots of self care, and look after you first! 🙂

I’ve never been a fan of planning out my reading because I’m also a mood reader, but there were a few months last year where I REALLY wanted to read set books so I planned a TBR, AND ACTUALLY STUCK TO IT. Like, whoa. That was a rewarding experience as I didn’t think I’d be able to manage. You’ve got some good books here, so I hope you get around to some of them!

P.S. Nice to find w fellow INFJ! We’re rare! 😉

    1. Awh Becky, thank you! Your kindness means so much. I’m definitely going to take it easy this month so I can hopefully get to a better place mental health-wise and of course, get out of this reading slump! It’s just no fun to be in one😭

OOOH wow I seriously admire you for being able to stick to your monthly TBR a few times last year. I’ve never been able to do it, being the major mood reader that I am😂 Ah thanks! I hope to get around to most of these this month and I’m excited.

WOOO a fellow INFJ! It’s not too often to find someone else since we have the rarest personality type haha. ❤️

  8. I really loved WE ARE OKAY! The subtlety really gives it that straight-out-of-real-life feeling and all the emotions the main character goes through (especially concerning the theme of family/found family) really impacted me! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
